Seat Belt Enforcement To Be Stepped Up For Thanksgiving Holiday

Illinois police have announced a stepped up ”Click It or Ticket” campaign across the state. It is hard to turn on the television without seeing a commercial reminding you to put on your seat belt and most holiday drivers are well aware that law enforcement will be out enmasse throughout the holiday season.

The ”Click It of Ticket” campaign is a national effort to prevent tragedies and save lives on the nation’s highways. This particular effort is going to be focusing on Nov. 21 to Nov. 27 with extended patrol hours and additional officers on the roads. ”As our roadways become more congested over the Thanksgiving holiday, buckling-up, both day and night, becomes even more important and may mean the difference between a tragedy and a happy holiday,” said Palos Park Police Chief Joe Miller

Regular seat belt use is the most effective individual way to reduce injuries and fatalities in motor vehicle crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Research has proven that the proper use of lap and shoulder belts reduces the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers by 45 percent, and their risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.
